Engineered for ice-prone sites
NEMA 3S Enclosures Built to Operate Through Heavy Ice
Enclosuremfg fabricates NEMA 3S enclosures for utility and industrial sites exposed to freezing rain and severe winter storms. Even when thick ice covers the exterior, protected operating handles and robust mechanical assemblies are designed to keep critical equipment accessible and operable.
External mechanism protection helps maintain access when the enclosure is surrounded by ice.
Why NEMA 3S
Designed for external icing—not just outdoor exposure
Standard outdoor enclosures can be compromised when ice seizes hinges, freezes locks, or blocks disconnect operation. NEMA 3S is intended for sites where external ice accumulation is expected and requires the enclosure and its external operating mechanisms to remain functional.
Using DFM (Design for Manufacturing) protocols, our engineering team considers ice-related structural loads and mechanical linkage performance to help prevent binding or shearing during operation. For freezing-rain regions, selecting 3S rather than standard NEMA 3R can be an important investment in operational uptime.
Purpose-built details
Keep critical external controls accessible in severe winter conditions
The exposed operating handle is a critical interface. Protective housings and carefully engineered door details help maintain mechanical function when the enclosure exterior is encased in ice.
01 / Handle protection
Ice-shielded operating mechanisms
Custom external shrouds and protective housings deflect falling rain and limit direct water ingress around disconnect switches and latches, helping keep handles free to rotate during a freeze.
02 / Door access
High-clearance, heavy-duty hinges
Reinforced external hinges are designed with clearance to reduce ice bridging between the door and frame, supporting access without relying on heat or excessive mechanical force.
03 / Cold-weather sealing
Gaskets selected for low temperatures
Sealing profiles are selected to remain resilient at temperatures as low as -40°C, helping prevent moisture from entering the chassis and freezing or expanding inside.
04 / Structural integrity
Built to account for ice loading
Structural stiffeners and mechanical linkages are designed with the added load of ice accumulation in mind, helping resist deformation and maintain reliable operation.
In-house manufacturing
Control over the details that affect fit and performance
Enclosuremfg operates an integrated production facility, managing critical manufacturing stages in-house to support dimensional accuracy and consistent quality.
50
Full-time staff, including 5 dedicated mechanical engineers
Laser profiling
12kW and 6kW fiber laser centers produce precise edges for tight-tolerance door-to-frame fits.
CNC bending
Multi-axis press brakes form complex structural stiffeners to support accumulated ice without enclosure deformation.
Precision welding
A 24-station welding department uses low-heat-input laser and TIG units to create high-strength, water-tight seams.
Powder coating
An in-house 2500×6000 mm coating line applies durable, UV-resistant finishes designed to repel moisture and resist wind-blown ice and snow.
Quality assurance
Checks at every stage, through final functional testing
A dedicated 6-person QA/QC team follows a closed-loop inspection process for projects intended for remote field locations where maintenance can be difficult.
-
01
Incoming material testing
Verify steel grades and coating thickness.
-
02
In-process dimensional checks
Audit dimensions after bending and welding to confirm door-gap consistency.
-
03
Final functional inspection
Test external handles, locks, and hinges to confirm operation within specified torque limits under simulated load.
Specification guidance
Is NEMA 3S right for your site?
If freezing rain and substantial external ice accumulation are seasonal realities, a NEMA 3S enclosure may be the right specification for your equipment. Our engineers can review existing CAD files or project requirements to assess ice-loading reinforcement needs and whether a custom-fabricated 3S solution is appropriate.
A practical design review can cover
- —Site exposure to freezing rain and ice accumulation
- —External handle, latch, and hinge accessibility
- —Structural reinforcement and door-to-frame requirements
- —CAD files, manufacturing requirements, and project volume
